Society of Ethnobiology Statement on the Foreign Entry Executive Order

The Society of Ethnobiology (SoE) supports the freedom of all of the world’s people to travel both domestically and internationally. SoE is a 40-year-old, 500-member scholarly organization based in North America that expresses a wholehearted welcome to immigrants and refugees from near and far. The SoE network extends out from North America to the many locations around the world where our researchers conduct fieldwork and to the many communities with whom we collaborate.

In Memorium: Daniel Gade

Dan Gade, emeritus professor at the University of Vermont, and a geographer with diverse interests who pursued fieldwork on four continents over four decades, passed away on June 15, 2015, aged 78.

Daniel Wynne Gade was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on September 28, 1936. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Valparaiso University, IN, in 1959, immediately followed by an MA at University of Illinois at Champaign ­Urbana (1960), then an MS (1961) and PhD (1967) both at University of Wisconsin ­Madison.

Aidee Guzman receives the 2015 Undergraduate Ethnobiologist Award.

Aidee Guzman is a student of Eve Emshwiller at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will be graduating this May with a Bachelor’s of Science in Botany and Environmental Studies. She has completed two senior thesis research projects, one on the impacts of honeybee hive placement on cranberry pollination and one on the effect of Mexico-US immigration on the transmission of plant knowledge. Our awards committee was impressed by Aidee’s coursework, her extensive research experience, and her leadership skills.

The Society of Ethnobiology is proud to present the Distinguished Ethnobiologist Award 2015 to Professor Emeritus Cecil Brown of Northern Illinois University. Dr. Brown's impressive career highlights the depth and breadth of the Society.

Changes in the Journal of Ethnobiology Editorial Board

The Society of Ethnobiology announces a change in the editorial board of their flagship journal. Dana Lepofsky, Kris Gremillion, and Lee Newsome have served as editors for the 2013, 2014, and 2015 volumes of the Journal of Ethnobiology. Moving forward with the fall 2015 issue and beyond, Dana Lepofsky and Steve Wolverton will serve as editors of the Journal. The Society’s Board of Trustees is very grateful to Dr. Gremillion and Dr. Newsom for their high quality work. The Journal of Ethnobiology has benefited enormously from their editorial work.
